social activities for LGBTQ+ Seniors

About the Senior Program

Are you 60 and over and LGBTQ+? If so, that makes you one of the pioneers of the modern LGBTQ+ movement! If you’ve come out recently or are only beginning to ask questions about your sexuality, you are very welcome. We can't think of a better time to join like-minded folks for some fun gatherings and interesting talks.

We offer these gatherings in the hopes of helping you break the occasional isolation that can come with getting older.

Our menu consists of senior luncheons, men’s socials, women’s socials, and a weekly drop-in for all LGBTQ+ seniors and friends. All are wonderful places to connect with others, learn about community resources and share time together. And if you’re one of those younger folks who stand on the broad shoulders of our LGBTQ+ elders and would like to show some gratitude, feel free to contact us to help out.

The Mission of the Senior Program

The Diversity Center’s 60Plus Senior Program offers LGBTQ+ Seniors in Santa Cruz County and the surrounding area opportunities to enhance their quality of life through social and recreational activities. We also provide LGBTQ+ Aging Cultural Sensitivity trainings to local senior service organizations to support them in improving their services to better understand and serve LGBTQ+ elders.

Honoring our 2019 Community Heroes! They banded together to support each other and resist homophobia in their community.

The Senior Program Committee received the 2018 Be the Difference Award!

Upcoming and Ongoing Senior Programs - Join us!

Senior Tuesdays

You’re invited to The Diversity Center to socialize with fellow seniors, every Tuesday except holidays, from 10am - 12 Noon. Enjoy beverages and snacks inside the Center, participate in engaging workshops, or have fun playing games like music bingo. Join Program Specialist Nic and your peers on Tuesdays from 10am - 12 Noon. Check out our schedule of Senior Tuesday events. Every week is different!

Walking Groups

We have two senior walking groups: Rainbow Strollers and Walk it OUT Wednesdays.

Rainbow Strollers meets every Tuesday from 1-3. For more information, reach out to Rich at 831-322-9827 to get added to the Whats App and see where the group is meeting.

Walk it OUT Wednesdays meets quarterly at the Watsonville Senior Center, and includes a free lunch. For more information, contact Meggie Pina at meggie.pina@diversitycenter.org or check our community calendar.

NOTE: You will be asked to sign a waiver before you walk with either group. Walking is physical exercise and can cause injury, strain, falls, dehydration, heat stroke, and exhaustion. By attending, you acknowledge that you are physically prepared to go on a walk and assume all responsibility for your health and safety. You are encouraged to check with your doctor that a walking group is right for you. If someone becomes injured on the walk and cannot move, 911 will be called.

Men’s and Women’s Socials

Both the men’s and the women’s socials meet every other month starting in February, either at someone’s home, for an outing, or at The Diversity Center. The socials are usually for two hours in the afternoon, though the time can vary. E-mail 60plus@diversitycenter.org or check our Community Calendar for more information.

The Senior Program Luncheon

Senior Luncheons happen every other month, in September, November, January, and March. Luncheons feature food, beverages, entertainment, and light education on a relevant topic. For more information about our next luncheon, check our Community Calendar or email 60plus@diversitycenter.org. We are always looking for volunteers to help serve food, set up tables, provide entertainment, and clean up. To volunteer, please contact volunteers@diversitycenter.org

The Senior Committee

The Senior Committee meets for one hour every two months to discuss programming needs for the Senior Program. The Senior Committee meets in August, October, December, February, and April. We are looking for senior volunteers who can attend our meetings, provide feedback on programs, and help plan senior events. Let’s grow our community together! Email volunteers@diversitycenter.org for more information.
